November is National Family Caregivers Month — a time to honor and celebrate those caring for their loved ones. It’s important to remember that caregivers come in many different forms and though traditionally we honor those caring for older adults and disabled individuals, we must also remember to honor the grandparents and other family members who step up to care for children whose parents are not in the home. This month, Generations United is elevating resources that support grandfamily and kinship caregivers.

  • Read Generations United’s 2024 State of Grandfamilies and Kinship Care Report: “Pathways to Success: K-12 Education Support for Kinship and Grandfamilies” discusses how about 2.5 million children in grandfamilies and kinship families are impacted by educational challenges and actionable recommendations to improve their school support and services. Our goal is to enhance academic outcomes and build a stronger future for these children. See all of our annual State of Grandfamilies and Kinship Care reports.
  • Whether you’re a grandparent raising grandchildren or supporting someone who is, our Grandfamily Caregiver Tip Sheets offer valuable tips and resources for self-care and youth mental health.
  • Discover our Racial Equity Toolkits Featuring Grandfamilies designed to give resources and tips to child welfare agencies, other government agencies and nonprofit organizations, so they can better serve all African American, Latino, and American Indian and Alaska Native grandfamilies regardless of child welfare involvement.
  • Dive into What Is/What Can Be, our program, experience, and exhibit featuring the world of What Is and What Can Be as seen through the eyes of adults and children in grandfamilies.
  • Learn more about the National Center on Grandfamilies, which conducts federal advocacy and empowers kinship and grandfamilies to elevate their voices to influence policies and practices that directly impact their lives.
  • Explore the Grandfamilies & Kinship Support Network’s Resource Library, which contains resources for direct-service professionals who help caregivers find community, feel seen, advocate for themselves and their families, and access the supports they need to thrive. Several of these resources can be shared directly with caregivers.
  • Follow Generations United on social: Check us out on Facebook, Instagram, X, and LinkedIn for updates on events, new resources, and inspiration.

Generations United and our nonprofit partners are not alone in working to support grandfamily and kinship caregivers. The National Strategy to Support Family Caregivers and Kinship Unity Action Agenda includes specific goals related to supporting grandparents and other kin who are raising children.

We look forward to working alongside kinship caregivers and advocates to continue to improve supports for caregivers across the lifespan.
