Generations United condemns the insurgence, violence and destruction that took place yesterday in Washington, DC, in the very neighborhood where we are proudly headquartered. We work every day with Members of Congress and their dedicated staff to improve the lives of children, youth, and older adults. We advocate for change within a framework that values our democratic process and differences. We believe in our democracy, which for more than 200 years has stood strong, and the values of which have been passed down from generation to generation. We support the right to peaceful protest and free speech. Yesterday’s lawlessness and desecration of our US Capitol was not our democracy in action. These domestic terrorists dishonored the sacrifices our elders made to build our Nation. Their actions do not represent the images and values that should be transferred to our children and grandchildren. This is a time to reach across generations and races to encourage tough conversations about what it means to be an American and how we can collectively strengthen our country going forward. We are stronger and better together.
